Specifically, LEDs may be formed using materials that are well-known in the art. Conventionally, LEDs include a P-type, a N-type, and an active (e.g., light-emitting) layer there between. The active layer includes a combination of materials and/or molecules that generate the desired emission. Although the LEDs are well-known, it is nonetheless desirable to improve the efficiency of the LEDs, which has been somewhat limited. For example, it is known in the art to make an LED that includes a PN junction that is known as an indirect junction. (This and other such LEDs are known in the art and are not related to the present invention.) The indirect junction is formed in a manner to cause light to be emitted at some non-ideal angle with respect to the PN junction. This non-ideal angle of emission is desired for various reasons. However, the PN junction cannot have perfect symmetry, and the use of a PN junction for emitting radiation always involves the emission of the radiation at some angle to the PN junction. Therefore, a high concentration of PN junction material always results in emission of radiation at some non-ideal angle with respect to the PN junction. Generally, as the concentration of PN junction material increases, the ability of an LED to generate radiation decreases. Specifically, in indirect junction LEDs, more of the radiation is emitted at some non-ideal angle with respect to the PN junction rather than by direct transmission through the PN junction. This also happens to be the preferred orientation of the radiating molecules with respect to each other. The result is to reduce the efficiency of the LED. To overcome the efficiency reduction, the amount of PN junction material that is used must be reduced, which in turn reduces the output of the LED. There is a practical limit on the reduction in PN junction material due to the directivity of the radiation. By reducing the PN junction material, an acceptable reduction in the output of the LED is achieved.
